In high school you can begin preparing for a career as an athletic trainer by taking plenty of science and physical education courses.
To become a trainer you usually need at least a bachelor’s degree in athletic training or a related area, such as physical education or kinesiology. These programs are 4 years in length.
While a bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement for many athletic trainer positions, most trainers also have a master’s degree or a PhD. These degrees can give trainers a competitive edge in the job market, and may be required for some advanced positions, such as those at colleges. It generally takes 2 years to complete a master’s degree, and another 4 years to obtain a PhD.
Certification is available through the Board of Certification (BOC). To qualify, you have to graduate from an accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree program in athletic training and pass an exam.
Almost all states require athletic trainers to be licensed or registered. Requirements vary, but usually include BOC certification. It’s a good idea to contact the regulatory authority in your state for specific requirements.
Athletic trainers should have good manual dexterity and physical stamina. They should also enjoy working with and helping people. Trainers are usually people who love sports and have a good knowledge of the many different sports people play.
As with all health care professions, athletic trainers must continually update their skills and knowledge as new techniques are developed and research advances. In order to maintain certification, trainers have to complete a required amount of continuing education.
